Nice, solid Italian cassone cabinet, with carved relief, shaped braces, large side handles and heavy-duty metal hinges on lid. Interior is wide-open compartment. Cassones are a traditional marriage chest, known as a arich and showy type of chest, which are often inlaid or carved, prepared with gesso ground then painted and gilded. This particular one only has the facial cameos carved in relief on the front panel.
